(This profile is a Work In Progress; I wanted to show that I haven't just been sitting around not working on my profile for the past week.)
Name: Thaniel “Thanny” Ellory Kleyn
Title: None
Rank: Errand Boy
Gender: Male
Race: Thaniel is a Nelral, of the Nelrai race, a group of feline-like humanoids that call this vast continent their home.
Originating in the deserts of Bagara, the Nelrai’s ability to adapt to almost any habitat have led them to spread quite nearly across the entire continent after the days of peace began. A cheerful yet hard working people, they are frequently seen in the cities of the lands, doing work that often requires their agility and resilience. Nelrai of Bagara often work as desert guides, thanks to their ability to withstand temperatures up to 120° Fahrenheit without ill effects. Filumdi Nelral like Thanny make excellent gatherers due to their skill in climbing trees, along with their exceptional night vision, which give them an edge in a dangerous environment where vicious creatures and vines alike can strike the unwary dead in an instant. They are hunters, they are artisans, they are mapmakers and explorers and just about anything that they can do to get by in their current situation. Thankfully, they are one of the more tolerated races, though there are some groups that consider them uncivilized, brainless beast-people, and lazy to boot (the fact that the average Nelral needs at least twelve hours of sleep a day as opposed to the eight required by humans does not help).
Morphologically, the Nelrai are very similar to humans in most aspects; they share a basic, though slimmer, humanoid build, and have the same numbers of fingers and toes, though theirs are tipped with semi-retractable claws in place of nails. Typical male Nelrai grow to about 5’2” although, as with any race, there are both exceptionally tall and extremely short individuals. Females are even smaller, and few if any have ever been known to break the five foot mark. Their bodies are generally slight, with some lean muscle on the fitter individuals, though there are some that are quite overweight from inactivity. Their faces are most often more of a rounded triangular shape than humans, with large eyes with slit pupils and eyebrows with a few longer “whisker” like hairs through them. Their mouths are lined with sharp teeth specialized for eating meat (Nelral are almost exclusively meat eaters, though they do appreciate certain spices) including two long canines. Though they have long adopted weapons such as bows for hunting purposes, these were once used for killing small prey with a spinal cord severing bite. Modern civilization frowns upon this form of hunting in general, however, and the practice of bite-to-death hunting amongst the Nelrai has all but died out. Their ears are long and triangular, covered by a coat of fur, the length of which varies by region and genetics. Though not as mobile as a normal cat’s ears, they are still capable of extremely sensitive hearing, and can pick up sounds too high-pitched for human perception.
Perhaps the most obvious difference between humans and Nelrai are, of course, their tails. A typical Nelral’s tail is a little more than half their full height in length, and strangely unlike a cat’s, they are partially prehensile, at least enough that they can support a fully grown Nelral’s weight when hanging upside down from a tree branch. Mostly, though, they are used for extra balance. As with their ears, they are covered in a coat of fur that varies between individuals depending on their location or that of their ancestors. Colors and patterns are diverse as well, ranging from ordinary colors like tan and brown, to fantastic hues such as blue. A Nelral’s hair color is nearly always similar to or compliments their fur color (or colors, as is often the case).
Nelral have no specific culture, as they adapt to that of whatever place they happen to call home, though some people think this is rather superficial of them. As individuals they are every bit as diverse as any group, though their race is typically inquisitive, outgoing, and unfazed by change. They do, however, consider themselves to be a very close race, and count even unrelated Nelrai as part of their extended “family” and are known for being hospitable, even to most other races (even the Nelrai are not entirely free from racism, sadly). Their life span is slightly longer than a human’s, but not by much, and in Medieval time period most die fairly young anyway. One of the few traditions of the Nelrai as a people holds that a Nelral is not considered an adult until the age of twenty, leaving Thanny still a child by his people’s standards. As such, he still shares a home with his parents and several of his siblings.
Age: 18
Class: Knife Thrower – Errand Boy – Gatherer (Gatherer refers to his usual task as an errand boy, the dangerous job of venturing down into the mid and upper-lower levels of the Filumdi jungle to gather ingredients for mages’ potions, poisons, and brews. It’s a messy, thankless, dangerous-as-heck job, but hey, someone’s got to do it)
Appearance: Thaniel has never really thought much about his appearance, his thoughts being too preoccupied either with his job or daydreaming about the day he is able to convince his employer, Mage Floiden, to finally teach him magic. If he was pressed to choose one aspect of his person that he was proud of, however, he would likely choose his eyes. Like all Nelral, they are comparatively larger than the typical human eye, with a brilliant green-gold color, and practically glow with his youthful enthusiasm. When caught by a particular interesting inner fantasy they take on a glazed look, which considering Thanny’s penchant for drifting off is quite often. As with his entire race his pupils are slits, giving him a slightly feral look, though any who knows the cheerful young errand boy knows better.
His teeth are strong and sharp, again a trait he owes to his heritage, though one of his canines was chipped from a fall when he was little, giving his frequent smiles a broken look that somehow only serves to emphasize his comical nature. The fur on his ears is a light red-orange, moderately short, but still extremely soft to the touch on the rare occasions when they are not splattered with mud, dirt, and occasionally blood. His unruly hair is a darker shade of the same hue, shoulder-length, and messy even on a good day.
Like most Nelrai, he is far shorter than your average human, especially for his age. He barely stands at 4’11”; extremely short for a human but only a little behind for his age as a Nelral. As with most of his species, his build is very slight. His strenuous work climbing in and out of the jungle has left him physically fit, but even a fit Nelral has little more than some lean muscle on their body. His body has several scars, but these are mostly small. You have to know where to look to know where they are. Like many Nelral, his skin tone is naturally a light golden color, though he is paler than most because his work demands he spend most of his waking hours deep in the forest where the canopy blocks out sunlight. When he does venture back up to the canopy city, it is usually just to hand over his day’s collection, annoy Floiden for magic lessons, and catch a meal at home before settling down for his usual twelve hours of sleep.
When it comes to clothing, Thanny keeps it simple. A sleeveless dark brown shirt serves as his top. Like most of his clothes, it was handed down to him from his older brother and is visibly worn, torn in several places only to be stitched back together with whatever thread was at hand. During the cold months a scarf is all he needs to keep warm; in fact, this scarf is one of the few articles that was not handed down to him, and on the rare occasions when it is not covered in filth it is a light cream color. His pants, like the shirt, have been passed down to him from an older brother. An off-color cream similar to his scarf, these are a size or so too large for his slight frame, but are kept securely in place with a leather belt. The right knee has a crimson square patch covering it, and there is a circle of stitches on the upper part of the left leg where it was once almost entirely torn off, but mended back into place.
Oddly, he wears no shoes; that way, he can grip the trees with the claws on his toes for better traction. The bottoms of his feat are tough and leathery from a lifetime absence of footwear to the point where it never bothers the Nelral to go without. The only thing comparable to jewelry on his person is the pouch perpetually hanging around his neck. This is small, made of leather, and contains some trinkets he has collected over the years. Currently it holds a round, flat stone, a mottled feather from some jungle bird, a few tiny bones from a forest creature, and a single fang from a snake. Just junk, really, but he thinks the pouch is “lucky” and will never leave home without it.
Weapons/Items:
Pouch: The hide pouch that hangs around his neck. (See above)
Throwing Knives: Set of six. These knives are small, about three inches with iron blades, and serve as his primary weapons. While they are typically thrown they can also be used for cutting and stabbing. Usually they are kept in special sheaths that hang off his belt for easy withdrawal. Not very dangerous in themselves, but one of his other items….
Poison: A small vial of clear, though rancid, liquid. Extracted from a particularly venomous jungle plant this concoction is lethal enough to kill even some of the bigger animals in the forest with large enough dosage. It is not as lethal against humans and similar races, but can still leave the victim violently ill if they receive no treatment. For emergency use only, as the bottle contains only enough for three coats to a weapon.
Pack: A bag made of hide holding several empty jars, as well as bandages and (usually) dried strips of meat. Used to transport the plants and other specimens he gathers from the forest. The top is designed to buckle shut in order to keep the objects inside from falling out when the wearer is, say, hanging upside down to reach an awkwardly placed plant. It is held in place by two straps as most back packs are, with an extra belt between the two for extra security.
Novo Animus: Unawakened
Talents: Compared to his race as a whole, Thaniel is pretty average; this means he is both more agile than most human beings (though there are some, such as trained acrobats, who could outdo him in that department). For the young Nelral, it is this dexterity that keeps him alive in his day-to-day work in the deep forest, where a single misstep could send him plummeting down to earth or, even worse, into the path of one of the creatures that lurk in the jungle’s depths. Fortunately, Thaniel’s impeccable balance is usually enough to keep him from tripping up, and when he does fall he is usually able to land on his feet no worse off than he was before.
Also handy in the perpetually dark environment of the lower branches is his night vision, allowing him to see well in lights that would leave a human near-blind. Add to this his sensitive ears and nose and one can realize why he is the one Floiden sends for when he needs some ingredient for potions; with perceptive abilities like these, added to his experience in the forest, he is able to navigate its dark lower levels with relative ease.
If Thaniel has one skill unique to himself, however, it is his skill with his knives. He’s no master knife-thrower, but if need be his aim with the throwing daggers borders on deadly…at least on the critters he has thus far practiced on. Even in the near-total darkness he can hit his target nine times out of ten. If he could not, he would not have survived this long. Though he has long dreamed of becoming a mage’s apprentice, with his stealth and ability to consistently hit his targets, he would probably be better suited to becoming an assassin, if it was not for his merry personality.
Unfortunately, while being one of the Nelral race gives him the advantage when it comes to senses, agility, and stealth, it also comes with an obvious disadvantage when compared to human beings: physically, Nelral have much less overall strength than a human. For example, even a relatively light sword (by human standards) would be quite heavy for a Nelral. So, in reality, Thaniel’s decision to use knives as his weapons is more a matter of practicality than choice, though he has gotten quite good with them over the years.
