Accustomed to extremely cold and moderate temperatures, when introduced to hotter climates, the Peirin are a race of beings that are much more likely to literally collapse from heatstroke within minutes. Any temperature over 85°C is known to be uncomfortable, and anything over 95°C is known to send them crawling for somewhere much, much colder. Within minutes, they will start to sweat heavily, pant, and under an hour they will collapse from exhaustion. If they spend anything longer than an hour and a half without shade, excessive amounts of water, and somehow keeping their core temperature under 97°C; chances are they will not survive. It will take quite a lot to keep them alive in such temperatures, thus they generally avoid them at all costs.
Peirin are born only in temperatures near or below freezing. Anything warmer and they don't usually survive. Once born and until puberty, Peirin children are usually kept at the highest and almost unlivable parts of the mountains, or in the coldest parts of Asadur. When introduced to warmer climates, almost all Peirin children either die slowly, or become extremely ill. This, is because their bodies are much, much hotter than most beings.
The Peirin can literally soak up water into their bodies. Their body heat melts the snow, and soaks it up through their pores of their skin. It's not uncommon to see a Peirin ( if you get the chance to see one at all ) lying out naked on a stretch of clean, white, freshly fallen snow. This, is to clean impurities from their system, such as a simple illness or fatal disease. They also use this in place of physically drinking water, when clean and fresh water is rare, or they're nowhere near an actual source. Because of this, they also tend to have ice literally growing and expanding their pores all along their body. As long as they are properly fed, only very old Peirins generally die from being left out the snow or cold ( though they're known to occasionally fall ill, like you might if you romp around in the rain ), as when a Peirin gets older, their body heat lowers drastically, making them better suited for somewhat warmer climates.
After puberty, a Peirin's body heat usually drops to half as hot as when they were first born. This, is because of their changing bodies. While a Peirin child will look more or less the same as your regular human child, after puberty a Peirin grows three or four new traits. Two things that always remain the same are the growth of a set of horns on their head. While the positioning of the horns vary, as well as the size and shape, women generally have smaller horns than the men, and men are more commonly seen with ram horns. The women have curving, straight horns that stretch along the side of their head, then around. The points then usually almost meet at the back of their heads. Another trait that remains the same, is the affinity for tracking. Suddenly, the world seems much sharper to them. Their eyes can take in more accurate details, and their sense of smell is as keen as a dog's, perhaps more so. Though these are traits that must be worked at, they are generally sharper than your average human's.
However, these traits have grown amazingly weaker the more the Peirin breed continues to go by being rare, as most of them find survival and mating to be the highest necessities in their life. A few of the most skilled Peirin trackers are said to be only as strong and as talented as a middle-class Helvinon Archer, while once they could have rivaled even the best and most noble of Archers.
The two other new adaptions to their bodies vary. In the line of the third trait, they either grow very, very tall ( going from the average of 5`9 to somewhere in the 7 foot range ) and somewhat muscular or pudgy ( pending whether they train their bodies, or let themselves 'go' ), or they become short ( literally, slowly shrinking to anywhere between 5`5 and 4 feet ) and quite thin. The reasoning for this is unknown. Those who are born tall are forced to workout, or they will grow pudgier. Those who are born short must equally work to keep their bodies fit and find it much, much harder than the average person to put on muscle. This, is why many of the Peirin left in the world are somewhat fat when tall, and anorexic or unhealthy looking when short. Sometimes, a Peirin will not even have this trait at all, and will remain to have a body similar to that of your average human - ranging in height and weight, and also finding themselves being able to put on and keep muscle much more easily.
Because of interbreeding between Peirin men and Human females, this is actually quite common.
The last and final trait that the Peirin come into after/as soon as their puberty hits, is the flourishing of a tattoo somewhere on their body. No Peirin will ever have the same tattoo as another. Whether the difference is only slight, or whether the tattoo covers their entire body, varies pending the Peirin. The colour, area it appears, and so on also varies. This tattoo generally matches the hair colour of the Peirin, or their eye colour. Some tattoos are known to be three colours, or three tones, however, and are more common the more pure the Peirin's bloodline. These traits fade in over time, slowly appearing on the destined spot of skin. Nobody knows how or why, but in the current Peirin society, the markings that are formed on a Peirin's body are usually used to identify their future position in the village/group, pending the size, or to further identify an orphan/stranger's Nobility or status.
Atair is also one of the Peirin that have a history of mixed breeding between humans and male Peirin, though both his parents and their parents were Peirin. Human blood shows true in him, as he stands at a simple 6`2 in height, and has your average human build.
